I bend so I don’t break

Remember how crazy 2016 was for y’all, but lit AF for me?! Well isn’t life like a box of chocolates? For the first couple of months of 2017, it felt like Mercury had completely chosen to set up shop in my life and LIVE in retrograde 🙃😩. The anxiety of turning 30…the overwhelming workload of my job…the financial burdens of my student loans…the strained friendships that developed…and everything else was beginning to take a toll on me EARLY in the new year. In my mind I’m thinking, “bruhhhh (God), noneeeee of these shenanigans were posted on my vision board. Let’s stick to the board please and thank you!”

I’m almost certain at that exact moment God laughed and was like “alright sis…ima chill. I been going mad OD on you lately. I GOT you!” (clearly my God wears Timbs and a Yankee fitted lol). Overwhelmed with life I decided to take some alone and unplugged time to pray and meditate with God. Not gonna lie. That adult ADD kicked in after about 20 minutes and I ended up on Facebook. I personally like to think I was being obedient and led there because low and behold I run across a Facebook event for a yoga session.

Flashback to like 2004, a visit home from college, my older sister takes me to my first Hot Yoga class in Chesapeake and I instantly fall in love. Even over 10 years ago, I never forgot the natural high it gave me. I had never felt so GOOD! But as a senior in high school I definitely couldn’t afford to maintain a yoga membership there. Le sigh. But what I could afford was a $10 mat and beginners DVD. Between then and now, I would stretch it out to maintain flexibility, but no real soulful purpose. Fast forward to 2017 and here I am on the verge of a breakdown as I approach 30, staring at my computer on Facebook reading about this yoga community called @BhavBrigade. Such a feeling of relief came over my body as I clicked “going” on their Moonlight Restorative: Yoga Under the Stars event.  Listen Linda. This yoga session changed my life! 🙌🏽The beautiful spirit and words of The Bhav Brigade founder Jessica Johnson allowed me to connect yoga and it’s movements to my life. She reminded me there is so much power and strength in letting go (and basically saying f*ck this shit). After her class I sat in my car and cried and thanked God for being faithful to me and for using Jessica to move in my life that night

Since that Spring class I have attended many of the donation-based, pop up sessions with the Bhav Brigade all across the 757 and I encourage anyone in the Hampton Roads area to also! Take a look at their website to see all the awesome events and projects they are working on, right in our (757) backyards. My yoga community is a constant reminder in my life that sometimes you need a moment to clear your mind and refuel yourself. You can’t pour into others from an empty glass.

So now every yoga class I attend I remind myself why I’m there: “bend now to make sure you don’t break later”

Take a look at some of the recent pop up classes held by The Bhav Brigade of Hampton Roads!

Happy 2017!

Y’all…LIFE IS LIT!

Can I get an AMEN?!

Long time, no blog…I know…but I’m back and I’m better *Bryson Tiller Voice*

So it’s no secret, 2016 was 0/4 stars for most people, but when I tell you God showed up and showed out for me…CHILE! Now, I won’t fake like last year didn’t have its hiccups and disappointments, butttttttttt we’re not living in Paradise so crappy moments are going to happen. The key to surviving those hellish moments is learning to adapt and trust His plans. I did just that and God not only provided for me in ways I have never been able to before on my own, but He allowed me to keep a sane mind and humble heart through it all. I was actually low key sad to see the year come to an end. However, the same excitement I felt for 2016, I had going into the New Year as the countdown began. I’m a firm believer of speaking your rewards and blessings and favor into existence so there was no other way I planned to spend January 1, 2017 than doing just that.

So…I did JUST THAT! I gathered some of my closest local girlfriends and co-hosted my first “VISION BOARD BRUNCH“!

I wanted the ladies to be just as excited for the new year as me so I went all out. I sent cute HobNob invites out in advance, collected magazines, printed Instagram quotes I loved, went to Michaels for enough craft materials for all of us, created a brunch menu (mimosas and sangria included of course), and bought each girlfriend a Balance Your Life Bracelet as a token of appreciation and what I hope to be a self reminder of balance for 2017.

FRIENDSHIP, FELLOWSHIP, and FOOD!

Together we hugged, laughed, prayed, testified, ate, and last but not least…visualized our futures for 2017!

I encourage EACH of you to grab your girlfriends, your sisters, your coworkers, or even your boyfriend/husband and give it a try. The great Malcolm X said, “The future belongs to those who prepare for it today.” The first step to living the life you want is to profess it. Create your vision board and look at it day in and out; work hard towards getting everything you deserve on that board and then SOME. Peace and blessings and GOOD VIBES ONLY!

Happy Vision Boarding!

Voíla! 2017 Board

The Brown Mermaid (black girls swim too!)

Beach. Pool. River..you name it. When the weather warms up and there is water around, I will be there!  And as soon as I get there, everyone gets the same disclaimer:

“I can not swim! And I’m so serious. Please don’t think I’m trying to be cute. I will drown!”

By tmermaid.jpghat time, I’ve killed the whole party vibes. Well not anymore!! For literally the past ehhhh 5 years, I’ve made the New Year’s Resolution to learn how to swim. This year I finally committed to it and I am proud to say I have officially completed the entire 8 week Adult& Teen Swim Lesson at the YMCA! Not to mention, April is “Adult Learn To Swim” month. I can not explain how excited and proud I am of myself. You know how hard it is to explain to some that you can’t swim and you’re West Indian?! Chileeee, it even confused me.

One of the biggest motivating forces behind this decision would be my little cousin in Jamaica, Zaneta Alvaranga. She’s a BEAUTY & BEAST in the pool at only 10 years old ! Her determination and strength at such a young age is SO motivating and astonishing. It goes to show you that no matter where you are, or even how old you are, you have the ability to motivate someone else out there. With being said: THANK YOU ZANETA for being my INSPIRATION!

Check out some of her footage in Jamaica below:

I got Pepper Sauce in my bag swag 🇯🇲🇹🇹

“Waiting on di stage stage stage stage!!”

What do you get when you mix a headstrong Jamaican and a fly ass Brooklynite? ME! A Jamerican that LOVES soca! Don’t get me wrong, I’m Jamaican: of course I love reggae and dancehall, but it’s something about soca that “gives me powers”!

The best part about this whole Trinidad Carnival experience, was that I got to experience it with my right hand (wo)man, my bestfran Tiz!!

#TizAndMandzTriniTrip

We’ve traveled many cities together and chipped and wined in plenty of carnivals…but no other experience has compared to this trip. The culture, the music, the food, the island itself is breathtaking. 6 days of Trini Heaven and I was instantly in love with the place and people. I literally cried at the airport when I had to board back to the states 😩

Sweet TnT 🇹🇹 will forever hold a place in my heart that can’t be replaced.
